What I Learned Teaching Numerical Methods for Fluids

· 1 min read

Three years ago I started teaching an introductory course on numerical methods for fluids. Here are a few things that worked, and a few that did not.

  1. Start with the 1-D advection equation. Every key idea — stability, diffusion, dispersion — shows up.
  2. Let students break things. A blow-up teaches more about the CFL condition than a lecture.
  3. Grade the plots, not just the code. Communicating results is half the job.
