Large-Eddy Simulation, Explained Without Equations

· 1 min read

Turbulence is full of swirls, from the size of a building down to fractions of a millimetre. Simulating every one of them is called direct numerical simulation, and it is usually far too expensive.

The big idea

Large-eddy simulation computes the big swirls directly and models the small ones. Big eddies carry most of the energy and depend on the geometry; small eddies are more universal, so a simple model often does a decent job.

Where it struggles

Near walls, even the “big” eddies become tiny. That is why wall models — the topic of my current research — matter so much.
